Kaprizov and Hughes by the numbers: what's driving the Wild's fast start
Eight games into the season, the Minnesota Wild are 5-2-1 with 11 points, second in the Central Division. That's a good start. The more interesting question is how they got there.
Two names keep showing up on the scoresheet. Kirill Kaprizov has nine goals. Quinn Hughes has a point in every game the Wild have played. Matt Boldy just scored a hat trick. So we went through every box score and every scoring play from ESPN and the NHL's own stats feed to answer one thing: is this a team getting hot, or a few stars carrying a roster?
The short answer is that it's mostly the stars. Here are the numbers that tell that story, and what they mean heading into Sunday's home game against Columbus.
Number 1: 21 of 26
Minnesota has scored 26 goals in eight games. We checked every one of them. In 21, at least one of four players had a goal or an assist: Kaprizov, Hughes, Boldy or Joel Eriksson Ek.
That's the "big line" coach John Hynes talked about pairing Hughes with, per the Pioneer Press, plus Hughes himself. Only five Wild goals all season have come without one of those four on the scoresheet.
That concentration cuts both ways. When the top group is on, Minnesota looks like a contender: four goals at Florida, four against Vegas, five against St. Louis. When the top group is quiet, there isn't much behind it. In the overtime loss at Buffalo on Oct. 6, Kaprizov, Boldy and Eriksson Ek were held off the scoresheet, and the Wild managed two goals.
Number 2: nine goals on 25 shots
Kaprizov's nine goals lead the Wild by a wide margin. His shot totals from the NHL's game logs: 3, 3, 3, 0, 4, 4, 3 and 5. That's 25 shots on goal, which means 36 percent of his shots have gone in.
Look closer and the nine breaks down like this:
- Five at even strength
- Two on the power play
- Two into an empty net, at Florida and against Boston
He had a hat trick at Florida on Oct. 10, two more at Winnipeg on Oct. 13, and a tip-in off a Hughes pass against St. Louis on Thursday, when NHL.com noted he became the first player in Wild history with 50 career three-point games. He has a point in seven of eight games.
This is the player Minnesota committed to long term. Kaprizov signed an eight-year, $136 million extension in September 2025, the richest contract in NHL history at the time, according to the Associated Press. His $17 million cap hit started this season.
The thing to watch is the shooting rate. Three or four shots a night is a steady, sustainable workload. A 36 percent finish on those shots is the part that tends to move. If it cools, his goal totals will lean harder on volume, and his assists (five so far) matter more.
Number 3: eight for eight
Hughes has two goals and 10 assists, 12 points in eight games. He has at least one point in all eight. NHL.com reported that the streak passed Andrew Brunette's seven games in 2009-10 for the longest season-opening point streak in Wild history. His eight-game season-opening assist streak tied Filip Kuba's 2008-09 run for the second-longest by a defenseman in NHL history.
The ice time explains a lot. Hughes has averaged 26:44 a night, topping out at 32:36 in the loss at Tampa Bay. The Hockey News had him close to 27 minutes a night after the Vegas game. He's also putting pucks on net, something the Pioneer Press said he's focused on: 24 shots on goal, including five in the opener at Nashville and five again against St. Louis.
The Pioneer Press put his pace at 1.5 points per game, which would work out to 126 points over a full season. Nobody should expect that to hold. But a defenseman on the ice for 26 minutes, playing heavy power-play minutes and feeding a line with Kaprizov on it, is going to keep producing points at a high rate.
There's a bigger story attached. Minnesota traded for Hughes on Dec. 12, 2025, sending Marco Rossi, Zeev Buium, Liam Ohgren and a 2026 first-round pick to Vancouver. The 2024 Norris Trophy winner, who turned 27 this week, can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, and the Pioneer Press reported that Hughes, his agent and the Wild's general manager have all said a new deal will take time. Every big night adds to that conversation.
Number 4: the goalie and the rest
The goaltending behind the stars has held up. Jesper Wallstedt has started seven of eight games and stopped 173 of 188 shots, a .920 save percentage. The Wild allowed 15 goals in his starts. Calvin Pickard started the other game, the 5-2 loss at Winnipeg. The Hockey News reported Filip Gustavsson is still recovering from off-season hip surgery, so Wallstedt's workload is likely to stay heavy.
Boldy rounds out the picture. He has five goals, three of them in Thursday's 5-4 win over St. Louis, the fifth hat trick of his NHL career per NHL.com. He has put 35 shots on goal in eight games, including eight on Thursday and seven at Buffalo. Eriksson Ek has 23 shots on goal and has gone three or more in six of eight games.
What it means on the board
This start is real, but it's narrow. That shapes which markets it shows up in.
- Points markets for Hughes are where the ice time and the power-play role show up most directly. Eight straight games is a trend built on nearly 27 minutes a night.
- Shots-on-goal props for Boldy and Eriksson Ek are the kind of market a high-volume top line feeds. Volume is steadier than finishing.
- Kaprizov's goal total is the number most likely to move. His shot volume is the stable part; a 36 percent finish is not.
- Team totals and the moneyline lean on the same few players. With 21 of 26 goals running through four of them, a quiet night from the top line has shown up fast in the final score.
Columbus visits Sunday at 6 p.m. ET with a 2-3-0 record. The research on the board updates through the day as lineups and goalies are confirmed.
