Sportsbook promos and referral bonuses: how to actually get value from them

Sportsbooks hand out value all the time. Welcome offers. Bonus bets. Profit boosts. Money for bringing a friend. Most people tap "claim," throw it on a long-shot parlay, and forget about it.

That's leaving money on the table. Used on purpose, promos lower what betting costs you. Used carelessly, they just get you to deposit and bet more than you planned. This guide covers how they work, what they're actually worth, and how to use them without letting them use you.

The main types of promos

  • Welcome offers. New-account deals, often "bet $5, get $100 to $200 in bonus bets." You place a small first bet and the book credits bonus bets, win or lose.
  • Bonus bets. Credit you can bet with but can't withdraw. Any winnings become real money. The bonus bet itself does not.
  • Profit boosts. A percentage added to the winnings on one bet, usually with a maximum stake.
  • No-sweat or second-chance bets. If your bet loses, you get the stake back, usually as a bonus bet, not cash.
  • Referral bonuses. You and a friend each get bonus bets when they sign up with your link and meet the deposit and betting requirements.

Bonus bets are not cash

This is the one rule that changes how you should use them. When a bonus bet wins, you get the winnings only. The stake doesn't come back.

Here's a $50 bonus bet at different prices:

  • At -200, a win pays $25.
  • At +100, a win pays $50.
  • At +200, a win pays $100.
  • At +400, a win pays $200.

Because you never get the stake back, a bonus bet is worth more at plus-money prices. Before the vig, a $50 bonus bet is worth about $16.67 at -200, $25 at +100, $33.33 at +200 and $40 at +400. Put a bonus bet on a heavy favorite and you've thrown away most of its value.

That doesn't mean "go as long as possible." Long shots usually carry more vig, and a +2000 parlay mostly just loses. A practical range is roughly +200 to +400, on a single bet you'd actually want to make.

Turning bonus bets into cash: the hedge

If you have accounts at two books, you can lock in part of a bonus bet's value no matter who wins. You put the bonus bet on an underdog at one book and bet the favorite in the same game with cash at another. That's a hedge.

Example: a $50 bonus bet on an underdog at +250, and $92.11 in cash on the favorite at -280 at a second book.

  • Underdog wins: the bonus bet pays $125, the cash bet loses $92.11. You net $32.89.
  • Favorite wins: the bonus bet pays nothing, the cash bet wins $32.89. You net $32.89.

Either way, $50 in bonus bets became about $33 in cash, roughly two-thirds of face value. Real prices won't line up this neatly, so run the numbers before you place both sides. Check each book's terms too, since books can limit accounts that only bet promos.

Referral bonuses: use them with your real circle

If a friend is going to sign up anyway, there's no reason not to use a referral link. Both of you usually get bonus bets. Here's how the three books most of our members use structure it, as checked on Oct. 4, 2026:

  • FanDuel: $50 in bonus bets for you and $50 for your friend after they deposit and bet at least $5. Up to 5 referrals every 30 days. Bonus bets expire in 14 days.
  • DraftKings: both of you get a $25, $50 or $100 bonus bet depending on whether your friend deposits $25, $50 or $100 or more, and they have to bet too. Up to 5 referrals per offer window. Bonus bets expire in 7 days. Not available in Massachusetts.
  • Hard Rock Bet: you both get a bonus bet matching your friend's first bet, from $10 to $50. Up to 20 referrals a month. Bonus bets expire in 7 days.

Offers change often and vary by state, so open the book's promotions page and read the terms before you send a link.

Two things to notice. First, every program has a cap, so referrals are for people you actually know, not something to blast everywhere. Second, the DraftKings tier depends on the deposit. Never tell a friend to deposit more than they planned just to unlock a bigger bonus, and don't do it yourself.

Profit boosts: boost a bet you already like

A boost raises your payout. Say a bet is at +150 and you get a 50% profit boost on a $25 stake. Normally it wins $37.50. Boosted, it wins $56.25, so the price effectively moves to +225.

That also lowers your breakeven. At +150 you need to win 40% of the time. At +225 you need about 30.8%. A boost on a bet you already like makes it a better bet. A boost on a bet you don't like is still a bet you don't like. Book-picked boosts are often on parlays priced with a lot of vig, so check the before-boost price, not just the bigger number.

No-sweat bets pay back in bonus bets

"If it loses, you get your money back" usually means you get a bonus bet back, not cash. Using the numbers above, a $50 bonus bet is worth something like $25 to $35 depending on how you use it, not $50. A no-sweat bet still helps, just less than it sounds. Treat it as a discount, not a free bet.

Read the fine print first

Every offer has terms. Check these before you claim:

  • Expiration. Bonus bets often expire in 7 to 14 days. A bonus bet that expires unused is worth $0.
  • Odds limits. Some offers require a minimum price or only apply to certain markets.
  • Max stake. Boosts and no-sweat bets usually cap how much the promo covers.
  • State rules. Offers differ by state, and some aren't available everywhere.
  • One account per person. Books enforce it. Don't share accounts or open extras.

The rules that keep promos working for you

  • Promo money is still bankroll. Size bonus bets in units like everything else. See bankroll management.
  • Never deposit more to unlock more. The best promo is the one that fits what you were already going to spend.
  • Don't chase promos after losses. A bonus that pulls you back in after a bad day is working for the book, not for you. More on that in chasing losses.
  • Shop prices too. Promos and line shopping work together: better prices on your cash bets, and bonus bets aimed at the right odds.

The DARIMARKET board lists plus-money alts and props every day. That's where bonus bets do the most work, as long as it's a play you'd make anyway.
