Ohio State beat Maryland 45-16, and the game was decided well before halftime. Julian Sayin hit Jeremiah Smith for a 33-yard touchdown on the opening scoring drive, Nate Roberts added a 68-yard catch-and-run later in the first quarter, and the Buckeyes went into the break up 31-10. Ohio State outgained Maryland 449 to 146 and ran for 207 yards on 48 carries. Two DARIMARKET plays cashed on this game.

What cashed

ALT: Ohio State -21.5 (alt, targeted -170 to -200): CASHED

  • Our read: Ohio State was scoring 42.2 a game and allowing 12.6, while Maryland was giving up 30.2. We took 12 points off the main number of -33.5 so a soft fourth quarter with the backups in would not sink the ticket.
  • What happened: Ohio State won by 29, clearing the alt line by 7.5. The cushion mattered: the Buckeyes threw an interception that Daniel Wingate returned 52 yards for a Maryland touchdown in the third quarter, and they lost a fumble too. Bo Jackson answered with a 25-yard touchdown run late in the third and a 2-yard score in the fourth to close it out.
  • Worth watching: When a favorite is laying 30-plus, the alt spread is how you keep the side without needing a full four-quarter beatdown. The main number would not have covered here, and the alt cashed with room to spare.

Jeremiah Smith anytime TD: CASHED

  • Our read: Smith had nine touchdowns in five games, six in his last two, and Maryland's defense was allowing 30.2 points a game.
  • What happened: He scored twice in the first half. The first was a 33-yard catch from Sayin with 8:40 left in the first quarter, and the second was a 40-yarder with 8:32 left in the second that made it 21-10. He finished with four catches for 93 yards, and both scores came on his longest grabs of the day.
  • Worth watching: Both of Smith's scores came from outside the red zone, on 30-plus-yard catches. That kind of big-play ability keeps his anytime price live even in games where Ohio State spreads the ball around.

How the game played out

Maryland never found an offense. Malik Washington completed 12 of 25 passes for 64 yards, the Terrapins went 3 of 12 on third down, and their leading rusher, DeJuan Williams, had 48 yards on 16 carries. Their 16 points came from a field goal, a 5-yard Washington run and the pick-six. Ohio State was not perfect, with two turnovers and eight penalties, but Sayin threw four touchdown passes on 21 attempts and averaged 11.5 yards per throw.

Trends to watch

  • Bo Jackson carried 23 times for 107 yards and two touchdowns, with Ja'Kobi Jackson adding 76 on 14. Ohio State ran it 48 times in a game it controlled, which is worth remembering for rushing props in lopsided spots.
  • Sayin threw only 21 passes. When Ohio State builds a big lead the passing volume drops, so efficiency and big plays carry his receivers rather than catch totals.
  • Maryland managed 146 total yards. Against top defenses, Terrapins team totals and skill-player overs deserve a hard look before you play them.
