BYU vs. TCU Recap: BYU ML and Jeremy Payne Rushing Over Cash
BYU beat TCU 17-10 on the road in a low-scoring game. Neither team scored in the first quarter. BYU got on the board after Faletau Satuala intercepted a TCU pass and returned it 59 yards, setting up a 16-yard touchdown drive that Bear Bachmeier finished with a 9-yard run. TCU tied it at 7 before halftime, and BYU led 10-7 from midway through the third quarter until the final minutes. TCU outgained BYU 259 to 216, but BYU had no turnovers, converted 8 of 16 third downs and held the ball for 32:57. Two DARIMARKET plays cashed on this game.
What cashed
BYU ML (-225 at DraftKings): CASHED
- Our read: BYU came in ranked 10th and laying 6. LJ Martin, with 328 yards on the year, figured to keep the clock moving.
- What happened: BYU won by 7. The clock part held up: BYU ran 38 times for 154 yards and threw for only 62. It just did not come from LJ Martin, who had 2 carries for 16 yards. Bachmeier carried the load with 15 rushes for 66 yards and both BYU touchdowns. After a 49-yard Matthias Dunn field goal made it 10-7, BYU put the game away with a 10-play, 72-yard drive that took 5:55 and ended on Bachmeier's 21-yard run with 2:06 left.
- Worth watching: A favorite that wins the turnover battle and the clock can cash even on a quiet offensive night. At -225, the edge needs to be clear before laying that price.
Jeremy Payne over 72.5 rushing yards (-118 at FanDuel): CASHED
- Our read: Payne had 355 yards on 73 carries, about 89 a game. With TCU missing backup RB Joe Pitchford, the carries figured to stay with him.
- What happened: This was a long shot by our own confidence, and it landed. Payne ran 14 times for 77 yards, 4.5 over the line. His 25-yard run early in the second quarter did most of the early work, and he had 41 yards at halftime. He sat at 64 yards in the fourth quarter before a 13-yard run with 10:37 left pushed him to 77. He also caught 4 passes for 23 yards.
- Worth watching: Payne got 14 of TCU's 30 rushing attempts. When a back holds that share with no one behind him, his rushing line is worth a look, though this one needed a late run to get there.
How the game played out
The first quarter had five punts and an interception. BYU's offense struggled through the air, with Bachmeier completing 11 of 24 passes for 62 yards. TCU's best drive was its 76-yard march late in the second quarter, capped by a 13-yard touchdown pass to Kari Ashley. TCU came up empty on a field goal try midway through the fourth quarter, BYU answered with its long touchdown drive, and Nate McCashland's 44-yard field goal with 32 seconds left only cut the gap to seven.
Trends to watch
- Kari Ashley had 6 catches for 108 yards and TCU's only touchdown.
- BYU's backfield was spread out: Journee Tonga, Legend Glasker and Preston Rex combined for 19 carries.
- TCU's run game outside Payne was thin, with Jon Denman at 7 carries for 19 yards.
