Coastal vs. Marshall Recap: Six Turnovers, Both Unders Cash
Coastal Carolina beat Marshall 27-21 on Saturday night, and the score hides how one-sided most of it was. Marshall turned it over on each of its first four possessions, and Coastal led 27-0 early in the third quarter. Marshall then scored 21 straight points, the last on an Owen Sweeney 19-yard catch with 2:14 left, and Coastal held the ball the rest of the way. Marshall finished with 505 total yards and six turnovers. Two DARIMARKET plays cashed on this game, both on the under.
What cashed
Under 57.5 total points (-105 at DraftKings): CASHED - Our read: Coastal's five games had totaled 55, 52, 36, 51 and 55, all under 57.5, and three of Marshall's five had stayed under as well. The forecast also called for steady rain from kickoff on, which pointed us further toward a lower-scoring game. - What happened: The game finished with 48 total points, 9.5 under the line. It was 27-0 with more than 11 minutes left in the third quarter, so the under looked comfortable for a long stretch. Marshall's late rally added 21 points, but the total never got close to 57.5. - Worth watching: Coastal has now played six games this season, and none has topped 55 total points. When a team's scoring history lines up like this, unders on its games are worth a look, as long as the price is near even.
ALT: Under 64.5 total points (alt, targeted -170 to -200): CASHED - Our read: Marshall was scoring 22.2 a game and Coastal 24.8. Dimers projected 56 total points, so the alt sat 8.5 points above the model. - What happened: With 48 total points, this one cleared by 16.5. Even with Marshall's 21 unanswered points late, the game stayed well short of the number. - Worth watching: A raised alt under on a game we already lean under is a common parlay piece. It costs more, but it gives a cushion against a late rally like the one Marshall put together here.
How the game played out
Coastal ran 45 times for 235 yards, led by Dominic Lee-Knicely with 169 yards on 25 carries. His 70-yard touchdown on the first play of the second half made it 20-0, and Coastal followed with a 28-yard touchdown drive to go up 27-0. Marshall moved the ball, with Zion Turner throwing for 219 yards and two touchdowns and Judah Price rushing for 124 yards on 12 carries, but three interceptions and three lost fumbles kept the Herd off the board until late.
Trends to watch
- Lee-Knicely's 25 carries were the clear lead role for Coastal. His rushing props are worth a look when Coastal plays from ahead.
- Price averaged 10.3 yards a carry and scored on the ground and through the air. He is a big-play threat even on limited touches.
- Coastal threw for just 73 yards on 18 attempts. This offense wins with the run, which keeps the clock moving and helps unders.
