The Sharks beat the Kings 5-4 in overtime, and Igor Chernyshov finished it with a slap shot at 3:18 of the extra frame, assisted by Macklin Celebrini. It was his second goal of the night. Los Angeles scored first on an Adrian Kempe power-play slap shot at 15:50 of the 1st. San Jose answered with three in the 2nd: a Tyler Toffoli power-play tip-in at 1:48, Kiefer Sherwood at 9:52 and Nolan Allan at 12:32. Quinton Byfield cut it to 3-2 on the power play at 19:58 of the 2nd, with two seconds left in the period. Chernyshov made it 4-2 at 4:08 of the 3rd, then the Kings came back with Erik Haula at 10:21 and Artemi Panarin at 15:00 to force overtime. Los Angeles outshot San Jose 35-25 and scored twice on three power plays. Two DARIMARKET plays cashed on this game.

What cashed

ALT: Over 4.5 total goals (alt): CASHED - Our read: San Jose gave up 3.56 goals a game last season, and Darcy Kuemper allowed 8 goals in his opener at Colorado. Both pointed to goals. - What happened: 9 total goals, 4.5 over the line. The fifth goal, Byfield's power-play wrister at 19:58 of the 2nd, cleared it before the third period even started. - Worth watching: Both teams scored on the power play and both goalies finished under .890. We called the alt worth it at -245 or better, and we would hold to that kind of price again.

Anton Forsberg under 25.5 saves (-110 at DraftKings): CASHED - Our read: San Jose averaged 25.8 shots per game last season, and Forsberg got the start over Kuemper, who allowed 8 goals in Colorado on Sept. 30. - What happened: Forsberg made 20 saves on 25 shots with 5 goals against and a .800 save percentage in 62:52. That is 5.5 saves under the line. The Sharks did not pile up shots; they turned a modest total into five goals. This was a longer shot that landed. - Worth watching: A saves under on a goalie facing San Jose is worth a look when the shot projection stays in the mid-20s. Goals against also cut into saves, so a leaky night can help the under.

How the game played out

The 2nd period was the swing. San Jose scored three times in under 11 minutes of game time between Toffoli's tip-in and Allan's wrister, and Los Angeles needed a late power-play goal just to stay within one. The Kings rallied in the 3rd, answering Chernyshov's goal with Haula's tip-in and a Panarin slap shot. Yaroslav Askarov made 31 saves on 35 shots for San Jose, and Chernyshov's second goal in overtime ended it.

Trends to watch

  • Kings PP1 usage: Byfield and Panarin each logged 3:31 of power-play time, Kempe had 3:04, and all three scored. Kempe also led Los Angeles with 6 shots on goal in 22:00.
  • Chernyshov had two goals and an assist in 16:23 with 2:25 on the power play. Celebrini had two assists in 21:42.
  • Askarov faced 35 shots while San Jose put 25 on Forsberg. Shot volume in Sharks games is the number to track for goalie saves props on both sides.
