The San Jose Sharks beat the Ottawa Senators 6-2 on Thursday on the back of a three-goal 2nd period and a 41-save night from Yaroslav Askarov. Tim Stutzle opened the scoring for Ottawa 6:16 into the 1st, and Nolan Allan tied it at 11:04. San Jose then took over in the 2nd. Tyler Toffoli scored on the power play at 9:13, Collin Graf scored shorthanded at 12:00, and Jacob Trouba made it 4-1 at 13:18. Jordan Spence pulled one back 6:24 into the 3rd, but Zack Ostapchuk and Ivar Stenberg added empty-netters at 16:31 and 19:43. Ottawa outshot San Jose 43-28 and went without a goal on three power plays. Two DARIMARKET plays cashed on this game.

What cashed

Mason Marchment under 0.5 assists (-275 at DraftKings): CASHED - Our read: Marchment came in without an assist in all 10 games this season, including each of his last 5. We backed that to continue against Ottawa. - What happened: Marchment played 14:15, including 2:05 on the power play, and finished with 0 goals, 0 assists and 1 shot on goal. Zero assists kept him under the 0.5 line. His one shot came 4:34 into the 1st. None of the six San Jose goals ran through him. - Worth watching: He is getting power-play time, which is the main risk for an assists under. He still has not recorded an assist this season, but the price is steep, so this is better as a small piece than a big swing.

Igor Chernyshov under 0.5 points (-170 at DraftKings): CASHED - Our read: Chernyshov had no points in 8 of his last 10 games and 8 of 10 this season, including no points in 4 of his last 5. We liked the under against Ottawa. - What happened: He finished with 0 goals, 0 assists and 1 shot on goal in just 4:54 over 7 shifts, with no power-play time. Zero points kept him under the 0.5 line. His only shot came 10:40 into the 1st. - Worth watching: His ice time was very limited tonight. When a player is getting under 5 minutes and no power-play work, a points under has a lot going for it, and at -170 this was a more playable price than the -275 on Marchment.

How the game played out

The 2nd decided it. San Jose scored three times in 4:05, first on the power play, then shorthanded, then at even strength. Ottawa had 18 shots in that period and 17 more in the 3rd, but Askarov kept it a two-goal game after Spence scored until the Sharks could hit the empty net. Samuel Ersson made 22 saves on 26 shots for Ottawa.

Trends to watch

  • Askarov faced 43 shots and stopped 41, including 8 power-play saves. The Sharks gave up a lot of volume, so his saves line is worth tracking.
  • Trouba logged 23:47 with 4:22 on the penalty kill and still scored and assisted. He played power play, penalty kill and even strength for San Jose.
  • Fabian Zetterlund had 9 shots on goal for Ottawa in 15:53, the most on either team. That kind of volume is a name to watch on shots props.
