What is an alternate line (alt line) and when is it safer?

An alternate line (alt line) is a prop or spread at a different number than the main line, with the price adjusted to match. A lower number is safer in the sense that it was reached more often in the past, but it is not safe: the price rises to reflect that, and one bad game still breaks it.

So the real question is never "which line is safest" but "is this number's price fair for how often it has been reached?"

What an alt ladder looks like

Take Kyren Williams of the Los Angeles Rams and combined rushing plus receiving yards. His 2026 games, from ESPN box scores: 65, 97, 158, 147, 76, 67, 121, 59. A book might offer the same market at several rungs. Here is how often each rung was reached in his 8 games.

| Rung (rush + rec yards) | Games reached | Past rate | |---|---|---| | 40+ | 8 of 8 | 100% | | 60+ | 7 of 8 | 87.5% | | 80+ | 4 of 8 | 50% | | 100+ | 3 of 8 | 37.5% |

The pattern is the same for every player: as the rung rises, the past rate falls. A lower rung looks safer, because the record is stronger.

Where the price comes in

On the morning of November 8, DraftKings listed Kyren's 60+ rung at -377, which converts to an implied 79.0%. His past rate at 60+ was 87.5%. The 100+ rung would pay far more, but he reached it in only 3 of 8 games. The price is the market's number; the hit rate is the past. Where they differ is where to look closer, not where to jump.

For the conversion math, see implied probability explained.

When an alt line is "safer"

An alt line is safer in these specific senses:

  • A bigger cushion. A back who averages near 99 yards has room under a 60 rung, and he reached it 87.5% of the time.
  • Floor games, not just averages. Look at his worst games. At 40+, his lowest game was 59, so even the 59-yard game cleared it.
  • Fewer ways to miss. A low rung only needs a normal game, not a big one.

It is not safer in these senses:

  • Cost. Lower rungs cost much more per dollar of possible return. At -377, a $10 stake returns about $2.65 of profit if it hits and loses the whole $10 if it does not.
  • Injury and role risk. If the player leaves early or the game script changes, even a low rung can miss.
  • Small samples. Eight games is a short record. See how to use player prop trends without getting fooled by small samples.

How to research an alt line in four steps

1. Choose the rung, then find the player's hit rate at exactly that number across this season, last 10 and last 5. 2. Look at the games, not just the count. A 7 of 8 where six games were far above the rung has more cushion than one where games barely cleared. 3. Convert the price to a percentage and compare it with the hit rate. 4. Read tonight's injury report on ESPN, plus minutes and role news.

DARIMARKET's star lane does this daily and shows the rung, the sample and the price together on the hit-rates page. For the basics, start with what is an alt line.

The bankroll side

Cheaper-to-reach rungs invite larger stakes, which is how a single miss hurts. The bankroll guide explains sizing in units so one result never decides the week.

Another common question: Can an alt line still lose when the hit rate is high?

Yes. A 7 of 8 record still includes one miss, and tonight's role, injuries or game script can differ. Kyren Williams cleared 60+ in 7 of 8 games; the 59-yard game missed by one yard.

FAQ

What is an alt line? An alt line is the same prop or spread at a different number, such as 60+ yards instead of a main 75.5, priced to match how likely that number is.

Are alt lines safer than main lines? They are reached more often when the number is lower, but the price is higher, so the risk per dollar is not lower. Safer describes the past, not tonight.

Do alt lines have a higher hit rate? Lower alt rungs do. A 60+ rung has a higher past hit rate than a 100+ rung for the same player, which is why the prices differ.
